沙特阿拉伯宣布将官方周末调整为周五和周六，以使工作时间与其他国家相一致，满足国内众多行业的长远需求。作为阿拉伯世界最大的经济体，自阿曼王国上个月调整周末为周五。周六之后，沙特阿拉伯就是海湾合作委员会六个成员国中唯一一个周四周五过周末的国家了。
新政令将于本周开始实行，受到了沙特众多经济学家和商人的热烈欢迎。
沙特阿拉伯国家石油公司前副总裁Ali al-Ajmi 赞称：“这将会增加与世界上其他国家合作交流的机会，现在事情可以发展得更快。”
全球最大石油化工公司之一的沙特基础工业公司前副总裁Abdulrahman al-Ubaid也非常赞同这项改变，他说：“我期望它能给沙特经济带来积极效应，我们认为我们国家的商业贸易会变得更加容易。”沙特正在考虑在不远的将来对海外投资开放股票市场。
虽然很多人支持这一改变，仍有少数人没想到改变来得如此之快。一些沙特公司，包括食品生产商Savola，为了与地区合作伙伴更好地协调，先前就已宣布他们把自己的周末调为周五周六。
新政令实施是在6月底，那时候学校放假，在9月的斋月到来之前很多沙特人都在休假，这就是说新政令还比较和谐。
“以前我们跟其他地区只有三天工作日是一致的，现在我们跟他们的时间更加协调了。多出来的一个工作日对增加产出非常重要。” 利雅得投资分析家John Sfakianakis这样说。
传统的沙特人一周工作六天，周五休息，那天穆斯林人都去清真寺做公共祈祷，但是政府还还是确定了周四也是法定休息时间。一些宗教保守者反对把周末调整为周五周六，因为那有点西方化了。不过，这点反对没有得到大家的支持。沙特社会学家Khalid al-Dakhil说：“依照反对者的说法，即使可能有点西方化了，但并不是所有信教的人都一致反对啊。”
上周日沙特国家新闻社就这项改变公开发表了声明，由国王阿卜杜拉颁布法令，这项改变会在本周末开始实行。“为了结束因当地各部门、各事业单位、各地区以及国际同行之间工作时间的不同而带来的消极效应，挽回不该丢失的经济机会”，国王阿卜杜拉签署了这项由国家舒拉委员会4月份提出的议案。
